SA's First Steam Engine Blackie is AWOL!

Blackie was the first ever locomotive in South Africa and was built R & W Hawthorn in Leith, Scotland, 1859 with S/N 162. She is the only one of her kind.

Backie was plinthed on Cape Town Station until renovations, then taken away for restoration work.

In 2014 it was announced that Blackie was about to return but apparently she is still stuck in Somerset West.

Originally an 0-4-0, she was rebuilt in 1874 as an 0-4-2T. Blackie was used as a construction vehicle on the Cape Town - Wellington railway and also worked on the Kowie River harbour construction project.

Anyone with full details of her whereabouts is welcome to contact me and pictures will always be welcome.

Don't you also think that Blackie should be returned to Cape Town Station?
